There are also other operating systems in use in microcomputers but they do not dominate the market due to their limited number of applications. At universities there are some special versions for research purposes or for teaching purposes only. The first operating system was developed in the late 1950s and early 1960s for non-commercial computers and was called "Operating System/360". The initial version of "OS/360" was developed by IBM that used many commonly available tools such as assembly language, compilers and text editors. Programming languages were very basic and unstructured at that time.In 1964, an IBM programmer called Don Bensen developed a natural language programming language called BASIC (beginner's all-purpose symbolic instruction code) which allowed users to program in English like syntaxes. This made programming much easier and more user friendly. These simple structured programs could be easily converted into machine language for execution on computers with little effort. This language became the new standard for all programming on IBM computers. Bensen visited Stanford University in 1965 where he met two students who were interested in the idea of developing the programming language into a full-fledged operating system. The two students were Bill Gosper and Paul Allen.In an effort to gather as much information as possible to allow them to create a working operating system, Gosper and Allen traveled around universities and colleges asking computer experts whether they could help them develop such an operating system. They found out that there was no such thing as an operating system as such and that the computer experts just wanted to use these programs for their own purposes. Bensen, who had left IBM in 1964, began working on a new operating system that was supposed to replace the existing "OS/360" but had to stop working on this project because of a bad back. This is how "UNIX" was born.In 1966, Gosper and Allen started developing the system with Bensen as their mentor. However they were not able to finish the project because of unknown reasons and so they decided to put it on hold. In 1969, Bensen returned from California and picked up where he left off. He finished his project after he had been contacted by some hackers at Stanford University that wanted to develop a similar operating system for their own purposes.
